Peter Fulop
Description / Biog

My interest in ceramic is mainly influenced by the Oriental-Japanese Tradition. After 16 years working and experimenting with clay, I find the reduction and Raku firing techniques the most effective to express myself.

I spent one and a half months in Japan, where we were fortunate to study from National Heritage Masters. The main subject of the Symposium was the Tea Ceremony and the Ceremonial Raku Bowls and Objects. I set up my own studio in Hungary in 1989 and started my own business in 2001 in Ireland with my partner Brigitta Varadi.

I have attended the RDS Christmas Show in Dublin and Showcase with the Leitrim Design House. In 2005, I have been selected in the Craft Council of Ireland, Christmas show at the National Gallery-Kilkenny and RDS, Dublin.

Apart from my own design-production, I also create ceramic sculpture and participate in different exhibitions. Important publicity for my work was unveiled in the following articles: Roscommon Herald (2003) "Bog land artwork is unveiled", The Irish Times (2004) "Ranting in the spirit of the 60's", The Visual Artists News Sheet "The Rant", Irish Art Review "Design Portfolio" and finally in House & Home "Objects of Desire" and in 2006, selected for The Craft Council of Ireland collectors events; The Hunt Muesum and The National Craft Gallery; 2006, selection for the Botanical Gardens.

I am currently working on a new serious of individual Raku works. Last year I started to work with free thrown gas fired porcelain. This year I would like to take this work one step forward and create larger and more free forms and shapes.

In 2006 I will be going to Annaghmakerrig, Tyrone Guthrie Art Residency, Visual Leitrim Art Bursary, and also to Cill Ralligh Art Residency at Ballinaskelligh, Co. Kerry, which will give me time and space to focus on my sculpters and develop a body of works for solo shows.
