Description / Biog
I served my apprenticeship with a Blacksmith here in my home County of Sligo. This gave me a good understanding and knowledge of the skills and techniques in the craft. I now work on my own designing and crating both contemporary and traditional ironwork. My work includes: signs, fire tools, fire grates, gates and railings, candlesticks, tools and sculpture. The attraction of smiting to me is in the creating of something both functional and beautiful.
Working with hot metals means speed is a crucial skill this sometimes leads to a piece being designed as your working, but as an old blacksmith once told me “Anyone can do a thing once. It takes a craftsman to be able to recreate it.” I have found this good advice for an Artist Blacksmith.
I see my work moving more in to sculpture but my love of industrial design will most likely keep a good proportion of my work as practical items.
